Filipina actress Ruby Ruiz has again brought pride to the Philippines after winning the Best Actress award at this year’s Harlem International Film Festival in New York, U.S.A.

Ruiz bested other actors from all over the world for her portrayal of the lead character in the indie film “Iska” which had a North American premiere in the festival held from September 10 to 20, 2020.

The movie “Iska”, directed by Theodore Boborol from a screenplay by Mary Rose Colindres, was an official entry at the Cinemalaya 2019 where Ruby Ruiz also won Best Supporting Actress award for her role.

“Iska”, which stars Soliman Cruz, Anna Abad Santos, Beauty Gonzalez, RK Bagatsing, Ricky Rivero, and Jonic Magno, tells a story of a devoted but impoverished grandmother who works as a photocopier at the University of the Philippines while taking care of her grandchild who has autism.

The film’s production company, Firestarters Productions, and the Film Development Academy of the Philippines (FDCP) announced the good news on its social media to celebrate the feat of the Pinay actress.

“Congratulations To Ms. Ruby Ruiz of the film, “Iska” for winning Best Actress at the Harlem International Film Festival 2020 this September 21, 2020, at Harlem, New York, USA!Ipinagmamalaki ka namin!” the FDCP shared on its Facebook post.

The award-winning movie and stage actress joined the roster of Filipino filmmakers who made headlines in bringing pride to the country after winning in various film festivals around the world amid pandemic.

Just this September, Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes won the Asian Star Prize while his TV series “Descendants of the Sun PH” was hailed as “The Most Popular Foreign Drama of the Year” at the 15th Seoul International Drama Awards.

Quezon City’s theatre and film teacher Geraldo “Jek” Jumawan’s portrayal of a grandfather taking care of a grandchild with hemophilia was awarded Best Actor by the Indie Film Chart based in the United Kingdom for starring in his short film “Pas-an” (Carried Burden).

“Gameboys” online series’ Elijah Canlas won the Best Actor award at the 17th Asian Film Festival held in Rome, Italy for his performance in the movie “Kalel, 15”.
