Science & tech solutions from colleges, researchers to help companies cope with “new normal”

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) today starts accepting proposals from colleges, universities, and research institutions for solutions to help Filipino companies cope with the “new normal” conditions.

Proposals for the DOST-Science for Change Program’s Collaborative Research and Development to Leverage Philippine Economy (CRADLE) can be directed to the agency beginning June 1, 2020.

DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña announced that the CRADLE Challenge 2020 will focus on equipping local companies with capabilities to become competitive during and after the current COVID-19 crisis.

“The CRADLE CHALLENGE 2020 invites all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Research and Development Institutions (RDIs) to partner with Filipino companies to create solutions to aid companies navigate through the new normal,” announced the DOST chief on social media on May 29.

The CRADLE Challenge 2020 proposals should consider the following:

  • to identify technologies and innovative solutions that can define the new normal for business processes
  • take into account potential long-term behavioral changes in the market
  • note the shifts and restrictions in value chain and logistics
  • research outputs should aim to advance the innovativeness and competitiveness of local Filipino companies
  • proposals should ultimately help jumpstart the Philippine economy

The CRADLE Challenge has 4 thematic areas:

1. Sustainable Supply and Logistics (Supply focus)
2. Products for the New Normal (Product focus)
3. Reinventing the Workplace (Process focus)
4. Services that transcends boundaries (Service focus)

Solutions should address any of these 8 sectors:
1. Pharmaceuticals and Drug Development
2. Natural Products
3. Medical Devices
4. ICT, Electronics and Communication
5. Sectors promoting import-substituting products, metals and minerals
6. Innovative Food Industries (including flavors and condiments)
7. Animal Health and Livestock
8. Plants and Crops

Submission of Proposals for the CRADLE Challenge 2020 will be from June 1 to 30, 2020 via this link.

DOST and its partner institutions have led the country’s innovative responses to the coronavirus pandemic. DOST and UP National Institutes of Health developed the first Philippine COVID-19 test kit and collaborated with UP Manila and UP Diliman for the RxBox Vital Signs Monitoring Device, among other several innovations.
