The Philippines’ iconic Fernando Amorsolo paintings depicting everyday life in rural landscapes rendered in LEGO bricks mosaic art versions can be viewed by the public at the upcoming art exhibit of the Pinoy LEGO Users Group in cooperation with the Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation.

Fifty years after the country’s first National Artist for Visual Arts was named in 1972, Amorsolo’s popular paintings of the ideal and beautiful world are being shared with more audiences through the art event “Fernando Amorsolo meets LEGO at Shang” happening on August 9-14, 2022, at the Grand Atrium in Shangri-La Plaza in Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong, Metro Manila.

The celebration of Amorsolo’s legacy and art features three iconic works: Early Traders, Dalagang Bukid, and Bayanihan, chosen by PinoyLUG members and assembled during the pandemic as these pieces’ themes are aligned with LEGO’s mission of creating communities that build and share together.

These LEGO projects come as this year marks the 50th anniversary since Amorsolo was recognized as the Philippines’ first National Artist for his masterful use of lighting and backlighting in his portraits and paintings that usually depict everyday life and rural landscapes. This year also marks 130 years after his birth.

To further promote an atmosphere of play, creativity, and community, Project: Amorsolo also includes fun activities for all mall guests:

  • It is going to host Lego Free Play and Activity, in partnership with ToyRUs, where anyone can join and build their own Lego masterpiece throughout the exhibit period.
  • There’s also the Painting for Kids Workshop led by the Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation, Inc. on August 13 from 10:30 am – 2:30 pm. The registration fee is PHP800, inclusive of art materials.
  • The foundation is also hosting the Sketching for Adults Workshop on August 14 from 10:30 am – 2:30 pm with a registration fee of PHP500, including art materials.

Interested participants can join by sending an email to bayanihanartworkshop@gmail.com.

LEGO-lizing Amorsolo, according to PinoyLUG, isn’t only meant to express the group’s love for the toy bricks as #MasterBuilderofGoodVibes. It also hopes to celebrate the Filipino bayanihan spirit and promote local artistry and creativity.

Amorsolo paintings-inspired prenuptial photos of a Cebuano couple have gone viral online. His works also adorn the newly restored historic Metropolitan Theater in Manila.
