The Philippines’ Sofia Frank has become the country’s first female qualifier to the 2022 World Junior Figure Skating Championships in eight years.

Frank booked her slot in the prestigious competition after placing 13th overall among the junior women in the recently concluded Santa’s Cup held in Budapest, Hungary.

The 16-year-old Filipino-American figure skater registered a total of 99.94 points in the free skating program to land a 9th place finish in her division.

In the junior women’s short program, Frank accumulated 42.97 points to rank 23rd out of 43 skaters in the event.

“So grateful to have this opportunity and compete for such an amazing country! It’s absolutely unreal,” Sofia Frank wrote in an Instagram post on December 11, 2021.

“Not the short program I was expecting, but I tried to keep everything together for the long, and got one of the highest long program scores for this season!” Frank added.

The Filipina athlete was one of the three skaters who represented the Philippine Skating Union (PHSU) in the Nebelhorn Trophy in September in her bid to qualify for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.

Frank will again represent the Philippine federation in the upcoming World Junior Figure Skating Championships slated in March 2022 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Born to a Filipina mother and an American father, Frank currently trains with world-renowned Olympic team coach Tammy Gambill in Colorado Springs.

Frank earlier bagged two bronze medals in the annual Colorado Springs Invitational in Colorado, U.S.A.

Filipino athletes who recently brought honor to the country include the Philippines’ Team Bagsik Muaythai fighters who bagged six medals and other awards in the IFMA World Muaythai Championships in Thailand and the Filipino bowlers who ended the country’s 15-year medal drought in the 2021 IBF Super World Championships in Dubai.
