Global sustainability expert Janice Lao has been included as a STEM Superhero by noted author and educator Erin Twamley in her new book, “Everyday Superheroes: Women in STEM Careers.”

The Hong Kong-based Filipina scientist and sustainability expert was earlier awarded in London with the Edie Award – considered the Oscars for Global sustainability – as Sustainability Leader of the Year, the first Filipino and Asian to win the prestigious award.

Lao, the Director of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability for The Hongkong & Shanghai Hotels, has also been cited by Forbes magazine as a top global sustainability leader for 2018.

The business leader has also mentored fellow Filipinos at the PH Time Is Now conferences in 2018 as one of the 20 Filipino innovators and changemakers from around the world.

Janice Lao as a STEM Superhero is one of the 26 women featured in the new book written by Erin Twamley and Joshua Sneideman, with illustrations by A Collective, and released by Wise Ink Creative Publishing in March.

The environmental scientist and development economist, and STEM advocate, is a working mother of a 9-year-old and a 7-year-old.

Lao went on social media to talk about her inclusion in the STEM Superheroes book saying, “I was floored. I didn’t know anyone was noticing the tiny steps I was taking to make a difference from my own little corner of the world. I hope my story along with 25 other women from around the world including Nobel winners, NASA scientists, inspires kids that STEM can be your life’s passion and mission, as it has been for mine.”

Lao adds captions her Instagram post with: “To my 7 yo self – I know you always wanted to be a scientist and you will be discouraged against it. It will be a challenging journey and you will doubt yourself countless times along the way, but you will persevere and it will be worth it.”

The book is presented in comic book style and is intended specially for girls 8-14 years old to see themselves with careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

Everyday Superheroes: Women in STEM Careers is designed to spur reader’s imaginations and introduce them to the colorful stories of 26 STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Readers will:

  • Learn about STEM real-life superheroes from an environmental lawyer to a robotics engineer.
  • See diverse women working in STEM and changing the world.
  • Explore six superpowers important to STEM fields: curiosity, observation, problem solving, collaboration, data-collection and communication.

Twamley revealed on her website that the Kickstarter project book took 2 years of writing and research to present the diverse faces of STEM.

Janice Lao is coming to Manila to talk about her being featured in the new American children’s book that champions girls going into STEM careers.
