In the heart of the Philippines, where community and kinship weave the fabric of society, a group of extraordinary athletes is redefining the essence of strength and perseverance. Helen Keller, the renowned writer, educator, and humanitarian, once said, “Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much.” This profound sentiment echoes through the lives of para-athletes, who find unwavering support in their communities, fueling their journey to excel each day.

Among these shining stars is 14-year-old Jerald Pelonita, a football enthusiast whose zeal for the sport transcends his physical limitations. Born without arms, Jerald’s passion for football illuminates his path. “It gives me joy because I can play with my classmates. They supported me to join the football team,” he shares with a smile that reflects his inner strength. Jerald’s ambition is not just to play; he dreams of emulating the famed Filipino footballers he admires, diligently practicing drills he learns from online training videos.

Guiding young athletes like Jerald is Coach Peter Lim, who recognizes the transformative power of inclusion in sports. “Jerald saw that there’s no discrimination in the sport. We help them develop their personality,” Lim remarks, highlighting the vital role of sports in fostering personal growth and acceptance.

Echoing this sentiment is Coach Coleen Faye Grande, a beacon of resilience. Once an athlete at a Manila university, a life-altering car accident confined her to a wheelchair. Yet, her spirit remains unbroken. Football became her sanctuary, a source of mental fortitude. “It has a positive impact on my mental health. They provide emotional understanding, encouragement, and promote my overall well-being,” Coleen reflects.

Passion Ignites Purpose

Despite daunting challenges, Jerald and Coleen’s dedication to football remains unwavering. Jerald, with his laser focus on the game, says, “I just think about how to win, how to defend. I may not do everything, especially with my disability. But I believe I can run as fast as everyone else.” Coleen, meanwhile, finds renewed hope and purpose through sports and the community’s support.

Their inspiring stories are part of this year’s Better Today: Power Move Project, a heartening initiative by PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications, Inc. Celebrating World Mental Health Month, the project spotlights Filipino para-athletes and coaches who embody persistence, bravery, and mental resilience.

This advocacy, supported by MVP Sports Foundation and Football for Humanity, aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals #10 and #3, emphasizing the promotion of equality, well-being, and digital wellness. It’s a testament to PLDT and Smart’s commitment to fostering an inclusive society where every individual, regardless of ability, is empowered to reach their full potential.

Filipino para-athletes have brought honor to the Philippines at many sporting events including the ASEAN Para Games and Asian Youth Para Games.
