The Philippines’ acclaimed gymnast, Carlos “Caloy” Edriel Yulo, showcased remarkable resilience by securing a bronze medal at the FIG World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, amidst his Paris Olympics preparations and without a coach’s guidance.

The Filipino champion gymnast showed his grit and determination by executing an impressive floor exercise (FX) routine, the event that had propelled him to international acclaim. Yulo delivered historic firsts at the FIG World Championships when he became the Philippines’ first artistic gymnastics athlete to win a medal at the FIG Worlds (FX bronze, Doha 2018) and the first to win the title (FX gold, Stuttgart 2019).

Yulo received a final score of 14.366 at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup Baku Final on March 9, 2024, to earn his spot on the podium with Belarus’ Yahor Sharamkou (14.933, gold) and Japan’s Minami Kazuki (14.666, silver).

The 24-year-old athlete’s performance improved his qualification score of 14.333 two days prior, lifting him from among the 36-man field into the top 3 of the final 8 last Saturday.

Despite his significant achievements, including dual golds at last year’s Baku World Cup, crowd favorite Yulo faced challenges this year. He failed to reach the finals and did not get the chance to defend his titles in vault and parallel bars.

Carlos Yulo Without A Coach

The absence of a personal coach since October 2023 marked a pivotal moment for Yulo. Training under Munehiro Kugimiya for 7 years until last year, and his supposed new coach Tomoharu Sano suffering an injury, Yulo found himself without direct guidance.

Yulo Gets Into Collaborative Training

Adapting to his situation, Yulo engaged in collaborative training, joining forces with top-tier gymnasts and benefiting from diverse coaching perspectives. His proactive approach included training stints in South Korea and the UK, broadening his experience and preparation.

What’s Next for Carlos Yulo

Looking ahead, Yulo’s journey continues with the upcoming World Cup in Doha this April, setting the stage for his anticipated performance at the Paris Olympics by July.
