UP, DLSU subjects enter THE World University Rankings

UP and DLSU are the only two Philippine universities whose subject areas have been officially ranked on the Times Higher Education WUR 2023. University social media photos.

University of the Philippines (UP) and De La Salle University (DLSU) have been officially ranked in the newest Times Higher Education World University Rankings By Subject (THE WUR).

The country’s premier state university and Lasallian educational institution were the only two universities in the Philippines which made it to the 11 Subject Rankings of THE WUR 2023 from among the record 1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions on the rankings which have gained a worldwide following from students, teachers, governments, and industry experts.

The London-based group studying trends in global higher education notes that THE WUR Subject Rankings 2023 published on October 25, 2022, uses the same performance indicators (Teaching, Research, Citations, Industry Income, and International Outlook) as THE World University Rankings 2023 which included Ateneo de Manila University and Mapua University in their debut ranking, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields.

UP

UP’s Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health subjects ranked among the world’s top 201-250, repeating its ranking when it entered the list in 2018 and keeping its country leadership for the 6th consecutive year.

The UK’s University of Oxford leads the table of 1,001 universities that are leading across medicine, dentistry, and other health subjects, giving more weight to citations and slightly less to teaching and research metrics.

UP Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health earned the following scores:

  • Citations: 88.0
  • Industry Income: 42.8
  • International Outlook: 42.3
  • Research: 12.7
  • Teaching: 17.8

The UP Manila College of Medicine administers the Philippine General Hospital as the COVID-19 referral center at the forefront of the battle against the pandemic.

UP also ranked in the following subjects:

  • Education ranks 401-500 among 655 universities that are leading across the following disciplines: education, teacher training, and academic studies in education
  • Business and Economics ranks 601-800 among 870 universities assessed by their performance in the following disciplines: business and management, accounting and finance, and economics and econometrics
  • Arts & Humanities ranks 600+ among 663 universities leading across the following disciplines: art, performing arts, design, languages, literature, linguistics, history, philosophy, theology, architecture, and archaeology
  • Social Sciences ranks 801+ among 941 universities that are leading across the following disciplines: communication and media studies, politics and international studies (including development studies), sociology, and geography
  • Computer Science ranks 801+ among 974 universities
    Life Sciences ranks 801-1000 among 1,017 universities leading across the following disciplines: agriculture and forestry, biological sciences, veterinary science, and sport science
  • Engineering & Technology ranks 1001+ among 1,306 universities leading across the following disciplines: general engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering
  • Physical Sciences ranks 1001+ among 1,307 universities leading across the following disciplines: mathematics and statistics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, geology, environmental sciences, and earth and marine sciences

DLSU

DLSU’s Education subject ranked among the world’s top 301-400, a marked improvement to its 600+ debut ranking in 2021.

Stanford University leads the table of 655 universities that are leading across the following disciplines: education, teacher training, and academic studies in education, and giving more weight to teaching metrics.

DLSU Education earned the following scores:

  • Teaching – 23.7
  • Research – 14.3
  • Citations – 54.0
  • Industry Income – 40.0
  • International Outlook – 34.7

DLSU also ranked in the following subjects:

  • Business and Economics ranks 601-800 among 870 universities assessed by their performance in the following disciplines: business and management, accounting and finance, and economics and econometrics
  • Computer Science ranks 601-800 among 974 universities
  • Social Sciences ranks 601-800 among 941 universities that are leading across the following disciplines: communication and media studies, politics and international studies (including development studies), sociology, and geography
  • Engineering & Technology ranks 801-1000 among 1,306 universities leading across the following disciplines: general engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering
  • Physical Sciences ranks 801-1000 among 1,307 universities leading across the following disciplines: mathematics and statistics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, geology, environmental sciences, and earth and marine sciences

DLSU emerging as the country’s top-ranked HEI in the field of Education was noted by Br. Andrew Gonzalez College of Education Dean Dr. John Addy Garcia to provide a reference for rethinking policies, priorities, and plans for the future, to further enhance the University’s institutional performance.

With DLSU retaining its rank for the third straight year in the field of Business and Economics, Ramon V. del Rosario College of Business Dean Dr. Emilina Sarreal pointed out that “as a premier business school, RVR COB will continue to strive to impart Lasallian values and emphasize the need for humanistic and ethical management.”

School of Economics Dean Dr. Arlene Inocencio said this achievement is “a testament to SOE’s commitment to quality and service.” Both the deans of Business and Economics expressed the University’s commitment to continuously improve and perform better through the Lasallian way of teaching, research, and community engagement.
