The University of the Philippines College of Law (UP Law) delivered back-to-back wins at the Jean-Pictet Competition on International Humanitarian Law, achieving a feat that only three other schools achieved in the tilt’s 40-year history.

The 2023 UP Law team composed of team captain Micah “Bob” Ecarma, Luis Alfonso Manlangit, and Mika Andrea Ramirez, won the Jean-Pictet Prize, rising above the 44 teams gathered in Durrës, Albania, to compete in the context of simulations and roleplaying built around armed conflict.

The 40th edition of the Jean-Pictet Competition which wrapped up on March 4, witnessed UP Law besting semi-finalists from the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (Switzerland), University of Basel (Switzerland), United States Air Force Academy (United States), and University of Essex (United Kingdom), and the University of Tel-Aviv (Israel) in the finals.

The previous year’s UP Law team composed of Paolo Jose, Caleb Catalan, and Lance Villarosa won the 39th Jean-Pictet Prize in Denpasar, Indonesia, where 21 teams participated. The 2022 UP Law team won against the host country’s Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia) in the finals.

UP Law has won various regional and international championships and will again advance in this year’s global rounds of the Jessup White & Case competition simulating a fictional dispute between countries. UP Law also partnered with the Philippines’ Commission on Human Rights to provide e-lawyering service during the COVID-19 pandemic.
