The traditional holiday celebration at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila this year was infused with the newest technology via a 3D video mapping presentation of the story of Christmas projected on one of the country’s architectural treasures.

The first school in the Philippines to have video mapping used the 91-year old Main Building as the screen for the video show that retold the story of the birth of Jesus Christ, along with the festive images of the season and the colors of the oldest university in Asia.

The UST Paskuhan 2015 3D video mapping show lasts 5-minutes. The technology used is also known as projection mapping, or video mapping and spatial augmented reality. The projection technology is used to turn objects, often irregularly shaped such as the UST main building, into a display surface for video projection.

“Dapat bawat taon may naiisip tayo na bago para lalo maging mas makabuluhan o mahalaga ang ating Paskuhan… Paskuhan Tomasino. So ito naman ngayon ang ating inihandog ang what we call 3D mapping (Every year we should come up with something new to make the celebration more meaningful… 3D mapping is our new offering this year,” said Professor Giovanna Fontanilla, UST Office of Public Affairs.

“Young people are now into the digital world. So this one was really interesting for our young people,” Fontanilla added in a media interview.

The video presentation and Christmas festivities on campus proceeded on schedule despite the heavy typhoon rains which hit the country. About 80 thousand students and faculty were joined by public visitors for the night time viewing.

The Main Building was declared in 2010 by the National Museum as one of the national treasures found in UST along with other structures such as the Central Seminary, Arch of Centuries, and the school’s open field which was the site of the Papal gathering for the youth when Pope Francis visited the country in January this year.

The UST is considered one of the Top 15 Most Beautiful International Colleges.
