Verdict’s lead actress, Maxine Eigenmann, won Best Actress at the 2019 Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) held in Brisbane, Australia.

The Filipino actress was recognized for portraying the role of Joy who, together with her six-year-old daughter Angel, suffers abuse from her husband Dante played by Kristoffer King in the Filipino film directed by Raymund Ribay Gutierrez.

Eigenmann personally received her trophy at the 13th Asia Pacific Screen Awards which gathered filmmakers to celebrate the cinematic excellence of the region’s 70 countries and areas for a night at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on November 21.

“Receiving this is beyond anything that I ever expected or imagined… This is for you Philippines!” said Eigenmann in her acceptance speech.

Verdict, the Philippines’ entry to the 2020 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film Category, is produced by Brillante Mendoza’s Center Stage Productions and Films Boutique of Nicolas Brigaud-Robert and Jean Christophe Simon.

The 126-minute Filipino film was among the 37 films from 22 countries that received ASPA nominations from among 289 films submitted to the competition.

APSA is an international cultural program supported by Brisbane City Council and powered by Brisbane Marketing. APSA is endorsed by foundation partners UNESCO and FIAPF-International Federation of Film Producers Associations.

“Film in the hands of a great filmmaker has the power to change lives; the power to bridge cultural divides; the courage to explore and tell our stories; to inform and entertain; to deliver better understanding into hearts and minds,” says ASPA of the mission of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Verdict had its Philippine theater run in September as part of the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino Sandaan Showcase. It had previously won the Orizzonti Special Jury Prize at the 76th Venice International Film Festival organized by La Biennale di Venezia.

Verdict producer Brillante Mendoza‘s Mindanao The Movie is currently screening in festivals after premiering in Europe in November.
