The Philippine National Anthem was heard for the first time as Carlos Edriel Yulo won a historic Gold as the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to win in the World Gymnastics Championships on October 12 in Stuttgart, Germany.

Carlos Yulo’s excellent performance makes him the reigning World Gymnastics Champion going into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for which he qualified on October 8, also at the 49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 2019.

The youngest finalist went into the Individual Apparatus Finals for Men’s Floor Exercise as the 7th strongest qualifier out of 8 contenders and emerged champion after besting top qualifier Artem Dolgopyat of Israel who picked up the silver, and multiple world champion Xiao Ruoteng of China who settled for bronze in competitions held at the Hanns Martin Schleyer Halle in Stuttgart.

The 19-year-old Filipino champion gymnast topped the men’s floor exercise final with a score of 15.300, edging out Israel’s bet who scored 15.200.

The teen champion raised the degree of difficulty of his routine from 6.2 to 6.5 to outperform the older qualifiers.

Carlos Yulo of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines, who has been training in Tokyo, Japan with coach Munehiro Kugimiya, improved on his historic Bronze Medal finish at the 2018 edition of the FIG held in Doha, Qatar.

Prior to meeting the Olympics Qualifier at the 49th FIG, Carlos Yulo won bronze at the 2019 Doha World Cup and a gold at the 2019 Melbourne World Cup Gymnastics in Melbourne, also an improvement of his 2018 bronze finish in the same series.
