Top-ranking Filipino-American chess grandmaster Wesley So is giving back to Filipino children with free chess education through the learning platform, ChessKid.com.

Wesley So’s partnership with the world’s number 1 chess site for children provides Filipino kids, particularly those aged 5 to 15, with free basic membership.

So, Top 2 in the 2018 Rapid Chess World Rankings, explained in a social media post why he is advocating chess education saying, “Learning chess will allow children to develop important skills in life such as strategy, tactics, creativity, perseverance, and calculated risk-taking.”

Since moving to the United States after winning the 2017 US Chess Championships, So had really wanted to do something for his fellow Filipinos in order to give back for all the support that he received when he was just starting his career in the world of chess.

“Now that I have achieved some measure of success at the highest levels of our sport, I am truly happy to have this opportunity to give something back,” So said.

To make the initiative possible throughout the Philippines, the Filipino grandmaster who ranked Top 2 at the Croatia leg of the 2019 Grand Chess Tour, coordinated with the founder and administrator of the Facebook groups Chess News & Views and ChessKid Philippines, Eliseo Tumbaga.

Filipino site users also have the option to upgrade to gold membership at a discounted rate of only $5 per year, $44 cheaper than the regular gold membership in the United States.

The upgrade gives Filipino kids access to other features of the site such as unlimited access to puzzles, playing chess online, lessons from beginner to advanced, more than 800 videos, workouts, game archives, and management tools.

To benefit from Wesley’s gift, Filipino kids or their parents need to write an email to elitumbaga@gmail.com with “ChessKid Philippines” as subject. Filipinos can also register directly at the ChessKid site in this link.
