The first Zambali Summer got off to a great start with a beach municipality concert held in San Narciso, Zambales along the West Philippine Sea, famous for its surfing spots as well as its sea turtle rescue and conservation efforts.

The event which was held on April 20, 2019 and organized by Awesome Events and Productions (AEP), Rough Stuff Entertainment, and Sound Experience Manila (SX Manila), was created as an opportunity to celebrate love, life, and faith, through music.

Sea Turtles locally referred to as Pawikans lay their eggs on the shores of Barangay La Paz, the venue of the first ever Zambali Summer. “Our very first project in Zambales is with Pawi Care, a project by the local government that helps save endangered Pawikans. It was then that we realized Zambales’ unique and diverse culture,” AEP’s Atty. Carlo Ybañez told Good News Pilipinas! Pawi Care is an environmental organization comprised of volunteers working to protect the sea turtles that nest on their beaches.

“Not only was it a beautiful place, it also had great food and unbelievably nice people. And of course, the music scene was awesome,” he added. He also remarked that the people of Zambales were “doing their part in helping the environment.”

The band Mayonnaise headlined the event. They performed their well-received original songs “Bakit, Pt 2,” “Tayo Na Lang Dalawa,” and “Jopay.” The crowd knew the words and sang along to every song! Mayonnaise also performed Coldplay’s “Yellow,” VST & Co.’s popular song “Ipagpatawad Mo,” and “Laklak,” a song the Filipino grunge band Teeth is known for. The people of Zambales were also very responsive when the band teased them with recent hits “Nadarang” by Shanti Dope and “Mundo” by IV of Spades.

Zambali Summer showcased the local talent in the region with performances of: Aw’te Amakeh, Feed the Wolves, Good and Bad, Guidelines, Horkos, Ice Charcoal, Leftdown, Peanut Breaker, Spinoff, Splendio Tritus, Steve, and Velcrow. The bands performed their originals as well as cover versions of popular songs.

Switchblade Manila, Gin Rum and Truth, Whiskey Version, Black Wolf Gypsies, and Hey Moonshine are the emerging bands from Manila that gave Zambales a taste of Metro-style rock and roll.

After the event, AEP’s Atty. Carlo Ybañez took to Facebook to express his gratitude to the people involved in making Zambali Summer music festival successful. “We saw Zambales at work here — From the Baranggay, to the local government, to the Zambales organizations, the local media, and the ordinary Zambales locals. All aspects of the event were made possible by the Zamablenos [sic] — from the venue, to the performers, to the suppliers, to the security team, to the event staff. 99.9% of this event was about Zambales.”
