Buwan ng Wika events urge using Philippine languages for COVID-19 info

Buwan ng Wika COVID-19
Buwan ng Wika 2020’s theme is “Wika ng Kasaysayan, Kasaysayan ng Wika: Ang mga Katutubong Wika sa Maka-Filipinong Bayanihan Kontra Pandemya”. Poster from KWF.

The Buwan ng Wika (Language Month) events this August 2020 encourage the use of Filipino and other local Philippine languages to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF) said the month’s events aim to urge people to use Philippine languages in the dissemination of information and announcements about the coronavirus disease.

The national language commission said that the resolution to the pandemic involves not only finding a vaccine but also requires widespread awareness of correct information about the virus.

The lead organizer of this year’s celebrations said using Philippine languages amidst the pandemic decreases the fear and stigma about the virus.

KWF listed activities that center around the Filipino concept of “Bayanihan (collective action)”:

  1. Creating and posting of slogans carrying the themes of the celebration
  2. Creating Infographics using local languages
  3. Conducting virtual forums and discussions
  4. Using local languages for instruction in universities and colleges
  5. Sharing of researches in the preservation of languages
  6. Using local languages in the provision of frontline services
  7. Translating important public documents into Filipino and local languages

KWF also released the following list of activities to mark the annual celebrations:

  1. KWF GAWAD DANGAL NG PANITIKAN – August 15-17, 2020
  2. KWF GAWAD DANGAL NG WIKA – August 15-17, 2020
  3. GAWAD KWF SA SANAYSAY NG TAÓN
  4. MAKATA NG TAÓN 2020

In 2019, Good News Pilipinas listed activities that help Filipinos celebrate Buwan ng Wika.

Google had also marked Buwan ng Wika in 2019 by translating Filipino languages into 100 languages and added native scripts on its GBoard.
