Filipino students scored major medals at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Canada 2020-X tournament held virtually this year.

The Philippine Robotics National Team won gold, silver, and bronze medals in the global WRO event which drew participation from more than 720 students from over 40 countries with several activities and challenges hosted online by Canada due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.

The theme of the 2020 edition of the annual WRO held from November 12 to 15 focused on the topic of Climate Change and allowed young scientists around the world to create robotic solutions in order to overcome climate challenges.

The World Robot Olympiad provides aspiring young scientists the opportunity to develop their creativity and problem-solving skills in a fun global platform every year. The online event WRO Canada 2020-X was an alternative to the International Final and was held via live streams of several competitions.

Mylene Abiva of FELTA Multi-Media Inc. and National Organizer of the Philippine Robotics Olympiad and World Robot Olympiad Ambassador (representing 72 countries) said, “The biggest challenge was to synchronize everything as the countries were from different time zones. WRO Canada 2020-X set pre-scheduled calls and connected the participants resulting in the same excitement and success as a physical event. The Philippine Robotics National Team has overcome adversity of slow internet access, remote meetings, school closure, series of typhoons and o line presentations to the WRO Canada judges”.

The robotics team of Dr. Yanga Colleges Inc. (DYCI) earlier copped gold medals for the Philippines at the World Robot Olympiad in Hungary, the WRO Friendship Invitational (WROFIT) 2019 in Aarhus, Denmark, as well as the FIRST LEGO League Open international tournament held in Turkey.
