Filipino actress and recording artist Yasmien Kurdi is earning praise from fans and netizens alike for championing sustainability at the recently concluded GMA Gala.
Yasmien Kurdi’s commitment to growth also shone when she earned her university degree while balancing her acting career and motherhood.
Instead of purchasing a new gown for the star-studded event held on August 2 at the Marriott Hotel Grand Ballroom, Kurdi chose to rewear the same gown she wore during the StarStruck Season 1 Final Judgment Night—21 years ago.
The Kapuso actress shared this inspiring moment on social media on August 4, expressing gratitude to the team who helped bring her vision to life for the 75th anniversary celebration of her home network, GMA-7.
Yasmien Kurdi once shared a heartwarming moment with her daughter Ayesha Zara, who sang a hopeful Michael Jackson song during the pandemic.
“Do you remember this gown? [Face Holding Back Tears emoji] This is the very same gown I wore during Starstruck’s Judgement Night 21 years ago! You might even catch a glimpse of it in the opening and closing scenes of GMA’s Station ID on TV,” she said on her Facebook post.
The post featured a before-and-after photo of Yasmien wearing the same gown two decades apart—then as a StarStruck finalist, and now as a celebrated actress.
According to the Kapuso star, rewearing the dress was her personal tribute to GMA Network, which gave her a break in show business when she joined the first season of the reality-based artista search in 2003.
“For GMA’s 75th Anniversary, I wanted to do something meaningful, a quiet tribute to everything this network has given me. That’s why I went back to the one and only Sir JC Buendia to have this gown upcycled,” Kurdi shared.
“It was such a warm and nostalgic moment catching up with him after so many years. Ang galing ng ginawa niyo sa gown… akala ko forever na siya sa cabinet ko. [Rolling On the Floor Laughing emoji] magagamit ko papala ulit. Hello Kuya Sander Andan Starstruck’s head stylist… thank you for introducing us to JC Buendia [Red Heart emoji],” she added.
In another post on August 5, Kurdi took the opportunity to shine a light on the importance of sustainability in fashion.
“Sustainable fashion is more important than ever, so I had this special gown upcycled by the talented Sir JC Buendia. It’s a beautiful reminder that we can honor the past while embracing the future without compromising style or the planet,” the actress highlighted.
“Thank you to my amazing glam team who pulled everything together despite my very last-minute… Cheers to timeless fashion and a sustainable future [Clinking Glasses emoji],” she concluded.
With this meaningful gesture, the inspiring actress and mother not only celebrated her journey with GMA but also set a shining example of how fashion can be both stylish and sustainable.
