Filipino vocal groups Astrafellas and ISKALA brought honor to the Philippines after receiving awards at the 2019 A Cappella Championships in Singapore.

Astrafellas and ISKALA won accolades as they competed against other Asian vocal groups in the International category of the choral competitions held at the Ci Yuan Community Club.

The two a capella groups’ recognitions add to the list of award-winning Filipino groups including Moscow Spring A Capella Festival champions, Acapellago, and Pinopela which took home the 3rd prize in the same competition in May.

The multi-awarded Astrafellas of Baguio City clinched the Gold Award Runner-up title in their category.

The originally all-male Filipino vocal group is composed of John Paul Cabasag, Daniel Frederick Mallari, Jon Rainiel Jimenez, and Yuri Dale De Guzman. Astrafellas performed with Chantal Salonga on stage on July 6 and gave new flavor with their choral arrangements of the songs “You Are The Reason” of Callum Scott, Christina Aguilera’s “Pretty Lady Marmalade,” “Million Dreams” from the movie The Greatest Showman starring Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams and Zac Eforn, and Bon Jovi’s “You give love a bad name,” “Livin’ on a Prayer,” and “It’s My Life”.

ISKALA, also an all-male and award-winning vocal group, took home the Gold Diploma.

The Pinoy a cappella group from Makati City, composed of Juan Carlos San Luis, Jhunmyr Flores, Carlito Calamba, Jomari Sugatan Ferrer, and Patrick Secopito serenaded the judges and audience on July 4 with their songs “End of the Road” of Boyz II Men, “How Long” of Charlie Puth, Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and “You’ll Be In My Heart” from Disney animated movie Tarzan originally sung by Phil Collins.

Established in 2001, A Cappella Championships is also known as AcaChamps – Singapore’s biggest singing competition dedicated to A Cappella music. It encourages a cappella groups to hone their passion for excellence for a bigger or global platform.

Astrafellas and ISKALA join other multi-awarded Filipino a capella groups Acapellago and Pinopela in raising the Philippines’ flag in the in an a cappella world.
