Filipino artist Michael Garcia Villagante wins Florence Biennale painting award

Filipino visual artist Michael Garcia Villagante has won the Lorenzo il Magnifico Award for Painting at the 13th edition of the Florence Biennale art fair in Florence, Italy.

Villagante bagged the grand prize for his work, “Pagtahan (Cessation of Crying)” which stood out from over 1,000 entries in this year’s international exhibit of contemporary art and design held in Florence’s Fortezza da Basso.

The Pinoy painter’s winning piece was distinguished among the best works in the competition which awarded exhibitors in several categories including design, painting, installation art, drawing, calligraphy and printmaking, video art, and performance, among others.

The international jury was made up of prominent figures from the world of art and design, including Elza Ajzenberg, Dominique Baechler, Pasquale Celona, Perla Gianni Falvo, Gregorio Luke, Mario Pachioli, Regina Schrecker, and Enrico Vergnano.

Villagante’s work is currently exhibited as part of the winners’ exhibit in Florence which showcases this year’s award-winning creations until December 4.

The Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea di Firenze, or Florence Biennale, is the major contemporary art exhibition in Florence where it is regarded as an outstanding showcase of the international contemporary art production. The 2021 edition was held from October 23 to 31, 2021.

The Filipino community library of the Gawad Kalinga Enchanted Farm in Angat, Bulacan won the Philippines’ first-ever award in the Venice Architecture Biennale in Italy.

Another Filipino visual artist Bricx Martillo “ShrimpPaste” Dumas recently won first place in the global DigitalArt4Climate competition in Glasgow, Scotland.
