How Is TPB Helping Catanduanes Rebuild Through Tourism?

TPB members and local leaders plant mangroves at Batalay Ecopark as part of Catanduanes’ tourism recovery efforts.

The Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines brought its tourism recovery efforts to Catanduanes with a five-day Members’ Inspection Tour and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

Discover how TPB brought hope to Batanes through tourism and community support.

Part of TPB’s Destination Marketing Assistance for Tourism Recovery Program (DMATRP), the visit held from July 8 to 12, 2025, aimed to support communities affected by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine in 2024 and strengthen the province’s tourism comeback.

Catanduanes Governor Patrick Azanza and Provincial Tourism Officer Carmel B. Garcia welcomed the delegation in Virac.

TPB’s CSR initiatives included donating school supplies to Talisoy Elementary School, providing protective gear for sea turtle conservation teams, installing tourism site signage, and distributing uniforms to community tour guides. Members also joined tree-planting and mangrove restoration efforts at Summit View Park, Binurong Point, and Batalay Mangrove Ecopark.

Marge San Jose, Chief of TPB Domestic Promotions’ Industry Relations and Services Division, said:

“This program has become an avenue for tourism stakeholders to join our collaborative efforts towards resilient, sustainable tourism recovery.”

Delegates visited tourist attractions including Puraran Beach, Bato Church, Maribina Falls, and Patag Islet. They also connected with 21 local private sector stakeholders during a networking dinner led by DOT Region V Assistant Director Maria Salee O. Mora.

TPB COO Maria Margarita Montemayor Nograles affirmed the agency’s support, stating:

“Catanduanes, truly the ‘Happy Island,’ embodies a spirit of remarkable resilience among its people.”

Since 2015, TPB has implemented 40 CSR programs nationwide to promote sustainable, community-based tourism.
