GlobalPort-Philippine Polo team won the Silver at the 5th All Asia Cup 2020 finals held in Thailand.

The Philippine National Polo Team finished in 2nd place bowing to host team, Thailand, in competitions held at the VS Sports Club & Siam Polo Park in Preng, Thailand from February 2-9, 2020.

Team Philippines played their best game in the week-long tournament by downing Indonesia, 8-5.5, to secure their first finals appearance in the event that gathered some of the rich and famous polo-playing royalties of the region like Brunei’s Princess Azemah Bolkiah and Prince Bahar, Shilai Liu, and the billionaire Srivaddhanaprabha siblings Apichet and Aiyawatt of Thailand.

The Philippines was clustered in Group A that included Thailand and Brunei while Indonesia was in Group B together with teams from China and South Korea.

“Up against some of the best teams in the Asian region, we proved we can be at par with them,” said Philippine National Federation of Polo Players (PNFPP) founding director Mikee Romero.

“Given more time to train and play in various tournaments abroad, I strongly believe we can play much better the next time,” added Romero.

The Philippine team, composed of Anthony Garcia, Adrian Garcia, Robert Esguerra, and Romero earlier beat Brunei, 10-9, in a tense quarterfinal clash.

Adrian Garcia, securing 3 goals for the Philippine National Team, won the All Asia Cup 2020 MVP Award.

The event was initiated by the late King Power Duty Free owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and was intended to raise awareness of the sport and elevate the level of sportsmanship.

Filipino netizens cheered team Philippines in the comments during the Facebook live of All Asia Cup 2020 Final Round.

The silver finish by the Philippine National Polo Team adds another strong showing of Team Philippines in world sports competitions at the start of 2020.

Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz firmed up her Tokyo Olympics bid as she won 3 gold medals at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Rome in late January.

Fifteen-year-old gymnast Jessica Rayne Tijam nabbed four silvers from two international rhythmic gymnastics competitions in the United States in January and early February.
