As a thriving financial advisor and agency leader, John Ronnel “Ron” Sales looks forward to a promising future filled with success and personal growth.

Ron Sales, the CEO and Branch Manager of Universal One LIA under Pru Life UK has come a long way in his remarkable journey of perseverance and success in the face of adversity.

With the leading life insurer Pru Life UK as his partner, Ron already achieved significant milestones at an early age together with an established general agency that embodies great entrepreneurial spirit.

Early and humble beginnings

Ron’s entrepreneurial journey began after graduating cum laude with a degree in accounting from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. But despite landing a full-time job after graduation, he still struggled to provide for his family.

The 28-year-old Certified Public Accountant (CPA) shared that being his family’s breadwinner was no easy feat. He took on multiple part-time jobs to supplement his income, from operating a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) to providing tutorial services for accounting students.

Deciding to leave the corporate world

And then a friend introduced Ron to the world of life insurance. Having lost his sister to cancer, Ron was already a firm believer in the importance of life insurance and knew it was a necessity in protecting his loved ones and securing his future.

Inspired by his friend’s success in the insurance industry, Ron eventually took the big leap and became a financial advisor.

He decided to leave his corporate banking job to become a full-time financial advisor, a challenging decision for Ron who also turned away an opportunity to work abroad.

Driven by his passion for helping others, Ron ultimately chose to stay and pursue a full-time career in the insurance industry.

To date, Ron still considers joining Pru Life UK one of his best and most rewarding decisions. He attributes much of his professional and personal growth to his journey as a financial advisor, believing that he wouldn’t have been the person he is today without his experiences in the insurance industry.

Becoming a team leader

It took Ron four years to work his way up from being a full-time financial advisor to a Branch Manager.

Among his proudest accomplishments in the industry is his recognition as a Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) qualifier, a testament to his exceptional performance and commitment to his clients.

The MDRT, a premier association of financial professionals, is a global, independent association of the world’s leading life insurance and services professionals from over 500 companies in 70 nations and territories worldwide.

Ron now heads the Universal One Life Insurance Agency in Pasay City with his wife. Starting operations in 2022, Ron built his team from the ground up amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Ron started with 67 financial advisors under his wing and grew the team to over 1,000 today.

What it takes to become a financial advisor

Reflecting on his journey, Ron stresses that his success as a financial advisor shouldn’t be attributed solely to his background in finance and accounting.

According to Ron, one of the most common misconceptions people have about the industry is that only those with backgrounds in finance can become financial advisors.

“You don’t necessarily have to be good with numbers. It’s actually a people business,” he asserts, stressing that the industry welcomes people of all backgrounds.

“One notable characteristic that all financial advisors share is determination. If you are determined to be in this career and work hard, you will be successful,” Ron added.

Those interested in becoming financial advisors can begin by working part-time and also enjoy flexibility in their work schedules.

Ron emphasized another defining trait of those who excel in the profession is the ability to handle rejections and move on quickly.
