UPDATED. The Lend-A-Bike Project initiated by Carlo Carlon a.k.a. The Cyclelogist has rolled out the first bikes loaned by netizens for use by health workers and frontliners who continue to report for work to help in the fight against COVID-19.

The first frontliner helped by the netizens-backed initiative is ambulance medic Jon who works in Pasig and had to resort to walking 3-4 hours from his home in Antipolo City because of the suspension of mass transport.

Lend-A-Bike’s Carlo Carlon met Jon in the afternoon of March 18, 2020, along Ortigas Ave Ext. to turn over the bike for lending. The Cyclelogist reports that Jon walked all the way from Pasig and was visibly tired after being on duty for 3 straight days. Now with this bike, he will no longer walk to the hospital and back home.

The second frontliner helped also on Wednesday is Robee Joy of Paranaque who works as a corporate chef.

Lend-A-Bike’s Io Santiago, himself a health worker in Medical Center Paranaque, facilitated the exchange between lender Victor A. Villano and the borrower Robee Joy.

The project report says Villano was one of the first persons who responded to the post asking for volunteers to lend their bikes.

“It is just amazing how random people are brought together by acts of kindness. Mr. Victor A. Villano wanted to be anonymous, but I feel a good deed like this should be shared and celebrated,” posted the Cyclelogist.

The Cyclelogist is organizing a Lend-a-Bike Project for health workers and front-liners who are experiencing difficulty going to work as public mass transportation has been suspended during the community quarantine in Metro Manila and the Luzon island.

Educator and bike shop owner Carlo Carlon, the man behind the blog The Cyclelogist, posted the announcement of the project on his blog and is currently coordinating with groups and institutions that will help in creating guidelines for the project.

“Hello mga kapadyak. I am about to organize a Lend-A-Bike Project for health workers and front-liners of several LGU’s in NCR.

“Alam naman natin na mass transportation has been called off in NCR. Madaming frontliners, lalo na ang mga health workers ang nahiihirapan na pumasok para gawin pa rin ang kanilang tungkulin.

“What we can do is lend bikes to them. If you have extra bikes at home, please lend it to them. I, personally can lend 2 bikes to them.

“Paano ang magiging sistema nito? At the moment, I am coordinating with some groups and institutions that will help in creating guidelines for this project. We would like to protect as much as possible the security of your bikes.

“In the meantime, I just need a show of hands of people who are willing to lend bikes for this project,” he said.

“Let us do our small share of battling this health crisis. Keep safe everyone,” adds Carlon.

Upon posting the announcement, the comments section was bombarded with the pledges from netizens willing to lend their bikes.

Interested to help? All you have to do is to visit their Facebook page: The Cyclelogist, comment your name on their post, the number of bikes that you can lend, and your location. They will get in touch with you once they are ready to roll-out the project.

Meantime the Pinoy Bayanihan is rolling throughout the country as several food outlets are sending free breakfast, food packs, and snacks to hospital workers as part of their support to the frontliners in the battle against the coronavirus disease.

In Palawan, Jc Enon and the JCI youth group have created DIY face shields as personal protective equipment for frontliners in the fight against COVID-19.

A group of students from the University of the Philippines Diliman designed easy-setup sanitation tents that can be used by local government units and establishments for free. UP, as well as De La Salle University, and Ateneo de Manila University are also actively assisting the medical workforce through prayers, donations, and fundraising drive.
