Philippine theater’s award-winning icon Cecile Guidote-Alvarez will be honored for her work as a global citizen at the upcoming Remake a World Gala in the renowned La MaMa cultural institution in New York.

Guidote-Alvarez is the only global honoree from Southeast Asia among the five outstanding individuals announced by the institution for the event which is part of its 60th anniversary season this year.

The Filipina theater artist will be recognized for her contributions as the founder of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), one of the country’s premier non-profit theater organizations.

Guidote-Alvarez was also cited for her “lifetime commitment of cultural caregiving” and providing free arts training to street children and the indigenous youth.

“Your lifetime commitment to cultural caregiving has had such an impact on your local community and beyond. Your work speaks to our shared humanity and we are thrilled to recognize you,” said La MaMa’s letter to Guidote-Alvarez shared by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) Philippine Centre/Radyo Balintataw on Facebook.

Guidote-Alvarez is also the youngest Filipina to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Outstanding Asian Award for Public Service in 1972. She was honored as a UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2003 for her collective work of a socially integrated performing group of differently-abled, out-of-school, and indigenous youth.

The Remake a World Gala will celebrate La MaMa’s global community which is comprised of artists and audiences who have long been part of its One World Vision.

Cecile Guidote-Alvarez will join fellow honorees in the event which will take place at the 60-year-old institution’s newly renovated landmark building at 74A East 4th Street in New York on May 5, 2022.

Filipino-Canadian playwright Primrose Madayag Knazan recently won first place in the Canadian Jewish Playwriting Competition, while award-winning artist Nina Lee Aquino was named the next Artistic Director of the National Arts Centre (NAC) English Theatre in Canada.
