As Brigada Eskwela 2025 kicks off on June 9, the EcoWaste Coalition has called on schools and volunteers to conduct the cleanup drive in an eco-friendly and pollution-free way.

The environmental group, which promotes a zero waste and toxics-free society, encouraged the public to observe 20 reminders aimed at reducing waste, avoiding toxic exposure, and protecting health during the nationwide school preparation effort.

“We enjoin our schools across the country to conduct this unique expression of the ‘Bayanihan’ spirit in the most eco-friendly manner possible to avoid garbage and pollution, which may pose health and environmental risks during and even after the Brigada Eskwela,” said Aileen Lucero, National Coordinator of EcoWaste Coalition.

Brigada Eskwela prepares public schools for the incoming academic year starting June 16. The Coalition emphasized that an ecological approach aligns with Department of Education (DepEd) policies like DepEd Order No. 5-2014 on waste management and Order No. 4-2017 on lead-safe paints.

Highlights of the 20 Pollution Prevention Reminders:

Plastic Use Reduction:

  • Avoid single-use plastics like water bottles, plastic bags, and foam food containers.

  • Bring your own reusable water bottles and use plant-based cleaning tools.

  • Say no to PVC tarpaulins that may contain harmful chemicals.

Solid Waste Management:

  • Practice waste segregation to encourage recycling and composting.

  • Never burn trash, and instead, compost biodegradable waste.

  • Clean and maintain the school’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).

Toxics Use and Exposure Avoidance:

  • Handle fluorescent lamps with care and shift to mercury-free LED lights.

  • Use safer cleaning agents and avoid mixing harmful chemicals.

  • Consult local authorities for disposing of special waste like electronics and paints.

Lead-Safe Painting:

  • Use only certified lead-safe paints for any school renovation.

  • Keep children and pregnant women away from paint areas.

  • Avoid dry sanding of old paint, and clean all dust and debris properly.

Smoking and Vaping:

  • Respect DepEd’s ban on smoking and vaping in schools.

  • Support Republic Act 9211, which bans tobacco sales within 100 meters of schools.

“An ecological Brigada Eskwela will also contribute to the advancement of the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment,” the group added.
