The Philippines has earned a new Guinness World Record for the largest display of solar-powered lamps, thanks to the global grassroots movement Liter of Light. Publicly revealed on July 2, 2025, at the Liwasang Rizal in Manila, the milestone marks the first world record of its kind in the country.
The record-setting was achieved on June 30, 2025, with an installation featuring 3,500 solar lamps, all hand-built using traditional ceramic techniques by women-led cooperatives. Before they are donated to underserved communities, the lamps are on exhibit at the National Museum of the Philippines in the first week of July 2025.
“This is more than just light—it’s a future where no Filipino child is left in the dark,” said Illac Diaz, Founder and Executive Director of Liter of Light. “By sharing this skill of hand-built solar lights that can be repaired and reproduced on a village level, this allows us to scale the number of people we help in the future. Through this world milestone in sustainability, we are showing the world that grassroots action can drive global change—one solar lamp at a time.”
Liter of Light Philippines shared aerial photos of the installation and its Guinness certificate:
The Circle of Light initiative, led by Sun Life Philippines in partnership with Liter of Light, the National Museum of the Philippines, and Odangputik Art Space, powered the Guinness attempt. Community-based groups worked alongside volunteers from the Department of Science and Technology, Rotary International, the Firefly Brigade, AIM, the Philippine Coast Guard, Youth for Dagat, and students from Metro Manila universities to create the life-changing lamps.
After the exhibit, the solar lamps will be donated to students and families in need, particularly learners in Region 4A, in partnership with the Department of Education.
This record follows Liter of Light’s previous achievements, including the world’s largest solar-powered light bulb display in the UAE and the largest solar-powered lamp display in India. The group continues to be a global leader in climate action, youth engagement, and sustainable innovation.
