Filipina scientist Dr. Mary Ann Sayoc, an alumna of the University of the Philippines (UP), has been awarded Knighthood in the Order of Orange-Nassau by the Netherlands.

Dr. Sayoc was honored for her work in agriculture and “tireless dedication in promoting The Netherlands relations with the Philippines.”

The Filipina scientist received the award from Ambassador of the Netherlands to the Philippines Saskia de Lang at the Netherlands Residence on April 26, 2021.

“I am very proud to announce that it has pleased His Majesty King Willem-Alexander to award a Knighthood on a leading personality of the Dutch-Filipino community. It is a recognition of exceptional merit to The Netherlands,” says Ambassador Saskia de Lang.

The Order of Orange-Nassau is awarded to individuals for longstanding meritorious service to society.

Dr. Mary Ann Sayoc is currently the public affairs lead for the East-West Seed (EWS) Group. She graduated from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Apart from East-West, Sayoc is also the chairperson on the Philippine Seed Industry Association (PSAI) and heads the Philippine-Dutch Fellows Network, Inc. (PDFNI), an alumni association of Filipinos who studied in the Netherlands.

Sayoc had a long career in the government, where she held key positions in the Department of Agriculture as Regional Director and Executive Director of the Agricultural Training Institute.

Additionally, Sayoc has been a board member of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (DCCP) since 2014, together with a number of Dutch-Filipino companies.

Notable agriculture advocates in the Philippines include UP Los Baños rice scientist Dr. Glenn Gregorio who has recently been appointed as a United Nations (UN) Food Systems Champion, 50 Next honorees Louise Mabulo and Cherrie Atilano, and Filipino expat and agriculture scientist Dr. Leocadio S.
