Filipino photojournalist Hannah Reyes Morales has won the prestigious International Center of Photography’s (ICP) Infinity Awards for Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism.

The ICP Infinity Awards held virtually on May 19, 2020, announced the win by Morales among the four major awards given out for “their incredible work and for their extraordinary commitment to raising awareness of critical social issues and telling stories of hope that ICP encourages and supports.”

Morales was cited for telling stories such as the forced marriages in Cambodia, women’s experiences with assault in the ongoing conflict in South Sudan, the long-term effects of colonization on women’s bodies in the Philippines, the toll of Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, and the Filipino Diaspora.

The young photojournalist is renowned for her documentation of tenderness amidst adversities. Her photography explores how resilience is embodied in daily life.

Morales posted her thoughts on her Facebook wall saying, “Amidst this difficult time I find that looking through the eyes of others has been of great value. It’s reminded me of how much we need each other: to live, to see.”

Hannah Morales also previously received the Tim Hetherington Visionary Award in 2019 during the World Press Photo’s Joop Swart Masterclass where she participated. Her talent was acknowledged as she was named a cultural leader by the National Geographic Explorer and the World Economic Forum in 2020.

Her work has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and National Geographic Magazine, among others.

Hannah Reyes Morales’ ICP’s profile states that she grew up in Manila, witnessing loved ones depart from home each year. These departures, along with the discovery of a shelf of dusty photographic magazines, stirred her interest in concerned photography.

More Filipino photographers have received international recognition, among them, Edwin Loyola who won high praises from the 2020 editions of the International Color Awards and the GoPix Exposée, Carlo Zamora and Klienne Eco who won in UAE’s Xposure Home-Captured photo contest, and Jophel Ybiosa who won the Asian Geographic photo tilt.

SEND CONGRATULATIONS in the comments below to Hannah Morales for winning the ICP Infinity Awards.
