The National Book Development Board (NBDB) is calling on young Filipinos to help solve the country’s reading crisis through the Readers Rising! Hackathon, where the best idea to reignite a love for reading among young adults can win a grand prize of ₱60,000.

Discover why the Philippine Book Festival is this summer’s must-visit fairytale land for book lovers.

Organized through NBDB’s Readership Development Division (READ), the hackathon invites Filipino citizens aged 18 to 25 — university students or young professionals in fields like advocacy, IT, marketing, business, communication, and humanities — to pitch their most innovative ideas.

This event proves that when you bring creative minds together with a purpose, the possibilities are endless,” said Daniel Lorenzo Mariano, Officer-in-Charge of READ. “Readers Rising isn’t just about coming up with novel ideas; it’s also about creating impact, equity, and giving our Filipino youth tools they need to grow through reading.

See how book reading and storytelling nooks are uplifting indigenous communities in the Philippines.

Participants can join both online and onsite, with the face-to-face hackathon happening on July 26–27, 2025 in Manila. The venue will be announced soon. All team members must attend in person to fully benefit from mentorship, collaboration, and networking with industry leaders.

The winning idea will be selected based on thematic relevance (30%), innovation (30%), feasibility and sustainability (25%), and presentation (15%). In addition to the ₱60,000 grand prize, ₱30,000 in minor prizes and special awards worth ₱10,000 will also be given.
