This March, The Asia Foundation honors Women’s Month through Lokalakalan 2024: Kultura, Kababaihan, Kabuhayan, a vibrant trade fair showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of 11 female artisans from the Bangsamoro region, featuring traditional weaves and unique handcrafted items.

The trade fair set to take place from March 15-17, 2024, at Rockwell Powerplant Mall and Alabang Town Center, is a collaboration between the Accelerate Women’s Entrepreneurship for Peace and Prosperity in Mindanao initiative (Accelerate PH) and the Community Crafts Association of the Philippines.

Accelerate PH plays a pivotal role in supporting over 2,500 women in various sectors across Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, and Basilan. This initiative empowers a diverse group of women, including former combatants, gender-based violence survivors, indigenous individuals, and those impacted by the pandemic, by fostering their entrepreneurial and workforce integration.

Lokalakalan 2024 goes beyond being a marketplace. It’s a celebration of women’s resilience, creativity, and cultural richness. Perlita Laguan, President of South Upi Monom Organization (SUMO), highlights the fair’s impact: “We became visible – within our families, our community, and the outside world. Our products offered a distinct identity… The increasing demand for our products proves that SUMO is doing good… Now we have a growing number of supporters because they see we can deliver – we are trying.”

The fair also marks a significant step for the women weavers of Meh Tubuan Megtetennun Dem Parangbasak and Maligue Bamboo-Based Crafts and Creatives (MBCC), offering them a platform to share their stories, traditions, and talents on a larger scale, fostering community integration and economic growth.

Ayala Malls has been presenting local weaves and crafts to the market, particularly at the Likhang Habi Market Fair.

Join Lokalakalan 2024 to witness the fusion of culture, artistry, and women’s empowerment. Support these remarkable women artisans, celebrate their heritage, and be part of their journey toward a sustainable future. Share this story and inspire others to be part of this transformative experience.
