Voice Over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) using 4G LTE instead of the traditional circuit-switched voice networks being used by 2G and 3G is being introduced throughout the Philippines through Globe.

Globe has fully-enabled Voice Over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) in the National Capital Region, Rizal, Bulacan, and Cavite and is introducing the technology progressively across the country to allow its customers to simultaneously surf the Internet and make voice calls while enjoying clearer and improved mobile calls.

VoLTE is a standard high-speed wireless communication for mobile phones using 4G LTE instead of the traditional circuit-switched voice networks being used by 2G and 3G.

“We’ve seen growth in voice calls during this time as more people do things remotely so we are constantly evolving to provide new ways of enabling our customers. With VoLTE, we’re not only providing our customers with quality calls but also the ability to do more,” said Albert de Larrazabal, Globe Chief Commercial Officer.

With VoLTE, customers can now have uninterrupted mobile browsing experience, online gaming, video streaming, and more, even with incoming voice calls. Since VoLTE utilizes 4G LTE, it has up to three times more voice capacity than 3G and up to six times more than 2G. This allows the network to accommodate more customers making calls at the same time with faster call set-up time, high audio and video quality, and even lower possibility of drop calls providing more efficient and convenient ways of communicating. VoLTE is expected to eventually take over the voice services of 2G and 3G networks as these technologies become obsolete.

As long as VoLTE is activated in an LTE network and in a VoLTE-capable mobile phone, it can already be used anytime. VoLTE is already being supported by many modern smartphones.

A companion to VoLTE is Voice over WiFI (VoWiFI) or WiFi Calling. VoWiFi helps alleviate indoor mobile coverage problems. Due to geographical distance between the mobile phone and the nearest cell tower, as well as some physical obstacles, such as building materials which wireless signals cannot penetrate, there may be weak mobile signals inside a home or building. This can be addressed by VoWiFi since it uses the existing WiFi service of the customer to make voice calls. However, VoFiWi is highly dependent on the strength of the WiFi service it is using and also requires a VoWiFi-supported mobile phone.

VoLTE and VoWiFi calls will be charged just like a regular call. Consumers who are registered to Globe unli calls promo can also have unli VoLTE and VoWiFi calls within Globe.

For Globe customers in the VoLTE-ready areas, they may check if their mobile phone is VoLTE-capable in the Online FAQs. They may also get in touch with a Globe representative through Globe Facebook Messenger and Twitter accounts once VoLTE becomes commercially available.

Globe’s VoLTE rollout is part of the continuous network upgrade and expansion that the company is doing to provide improved call and data experience to its customers. To ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to mobile technology and services, Globe is also encouraging its customers to replace their 2G and 3G SIMs with 4G LTE/5G-ready SIMs for free by booking a Store appointment via http://glbe.co/abs-queue or the GlobeOne app. They may also avail of 4G smartphones at https://shop.globe.com.ph/ or get them as prepaid kits, a freebie with new postpaid lines, or for postpaid plan renewal.

The company’s investments in the network are also in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UNSDG No. 9 which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development. Globe is committed to upholding the 10 United Nations Global Compact principles and 10 UN SDGs.
