The New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac, is a Top 10 nominee for the Stadium of the Year global awards.

The New Clark City Athletics Stadium, built as the center of the 30th Southeast Asian Games hosted by the Philippines in 2019 and the site of the closing ceremonies, was announced on March 3, 2020, as among the Top 10 finalists for the Jury Award of the Stadium of the Year.

The Athletics Stadium is also among the 21 modern stadiums that opened in 19 countries in 2019 that are vying for votes in the Public Award in the same global awards.

The Philippines’ Athletics Stadium is a 20,000-seater facility in New Clark City designed by the Budji+Royal Architecture+Design firm and built by MTD Clark, Inc. It is also the first sports facility in the Philippines with a track certified as Class 1 Olympic Grade by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). It is part of the New Clark City Phase 1A development of the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA).

“To be nominated as one of the top 10 stadiums proves that Filipinos can build a truly world-class facility. The sports facilities built in New Clark City are what our athletes deserve and we hope this recognition will further inspire them,” said BCDA President and CEO Vince Dizon.

According to StadiumDB.com, while New Clark City Stadium is not the most advanced, biggest or most expensive stadium opened in 2019, it makes up for it in creativity.

“The use of lahar as construction material adds to its local identity, while rhythmic orange supports give it dynamism. The volcanic symbolism of Mount Pinatubo brings together the neutral grey and black elements and vivid orange details, creating a very consistent stadium,” StadiumDB noted.

The Jury first evaluated all 21 candidates and afterward, the shortlist of 10 finalists was revealed.

In its 10th edition of Stadium of the Year, StadiumDB.com is inviting everyone around the world to rank stadiums opened in the past 12 months. The annual “Stadium of the Year” Awards is a non-commercial project launched 10 years ago to celebrate the best of stadium architecture.
