Rico Hizon has clinched the title of Best Factual Presenter for the Philippines at the 2023 Asian Academy Creative Awards (AACA), Asia-Pacific’s most prestigious Award For Creative Excellence at which the region’s best content and creatives are scored patterned after the International Emmy Awards. The Filipino journalist is set to shine on the international stage at the Grand Awards and Gala Finals in December.

The announcement was made during a September 28 livestream, where the AACA revealed over 300 National Winners in 36 categories. Hizon, a seasoned international news anchor for CNN Philippines, was applauded for his journalistic excellence in his nightly newscast, The Final Word.

This marks Hizon’s second AACA national win, following the Best News Programme accolade for The Final Word in 2020. He had returned to Philippine TV that year after 25 years abroad, reporting for global news organizations BBC News and CNBC.

The CNN Philippines senior news anchor is no stranger to awards. He previously won back-to-back Asian Television Awards (ATA) for Best News Anchor and Best News Programme. Prior to returning to his country, Hizon had won the ATA for his BBC program, Newsday.

For the AACA Grand Finals, Hizon is up against presenters from Australia (Rachel Perkins), Hong Kong SAR (Priscilla Wong), India (Levison Wood), Indonesia (Riko Anggara), Singapore (Martin Soong), and Taiwan (Lee Chen-Chen).

Judging for the AACA Finals mirrors the International Emmy Awards, ensuring Asia-Pacific talent is evaluated against global standards.

In a social media post, Hizon expressed his gratitude for the valuable win at the Asian Academy Creative Awards. “This recognition inspires the CNN Philippines news team to do better and do more: to inform and educate our viewers the real facts. As broadcast journalists – our responsibility is to give the public an accurate, truthful, unbiased account of the news.”

The AACA Grand Awards and Gala Finals will take place at the historic Chijmes Hall in Singapore on December 7.
