200 Hours of Roller Coaster Ride: A Good News Pilipinas Intern’s Journey of Thrills and Spills!

Junie Batocael met GoodNewsPilipinas EIC Rico Hizon at her internship completion ceremony.

Excitement. Fear. Pressure. Laughter. Amused.

Starting an internship feels like hopping onto a rollercoaster of emotions. There are moments of sheer excitement when you conquer new challenges, but also times of anxiety as you try to prove yourself. It’s a whirlwind of feelings, but in the midst of it all, you make friends so that you can share laughter and new ideas with, get stronger, and learn valuable lessons. Navigating these ups and downs isn’t just a ride—it’s an adventure that shapes you, pushing you closer to your dreams with every twist and turn.

Excitement surged through me like a jolt of electricity when I got a reply from GoodNewsPilipinas.com after sending my internship application. It was like I was one step closer to my dream of becoming a journalist, and I wanted to shout it from the rooftops. But oh, the rollercoaster hadn’t even left the station yet! My interview with Ms. Angie Balibay was a mix of nerves and friendly banter. I was sweating bullets, but thankfully, I didn’t turn into a babbling mess. It was more like a casual chat, you know, just a “getting to know you” kind of thing. I see myself spending the next 200 hours of my life at this company. I felt valued, like my voice mattered. Everything was smooth sailing until… dun dun dun! The unexpected happened. My internship days turned into a soap opera, complete with dramatic twists and turns. It was like watching an afternoon melodrama on Philippine television, and I was the star of the show.

Fear gripped me like a vice when, in just three days, our intern group from Cavite State University – Imus Campus dwindled from four to just one. I felt a mix of sadness and panic, wondering if I’d ever finish my 200 hours on time. If there was a soundtrack to capture my emotions, it would be Olivia Rodrigo’s “Traitor” – feeling betrayed by circumstances beyond my control. I had imagined finishing our internship journey at GoodNewsPilipinas.com with my co-interns, but like a cliché soap opera plot twist, I found myself facing unexpected challenges. I was scared, feeling like I couldn’t navigate this rollercoaster alone. I longed for someone to share the ups and downs, to scream with me during the thrilling moments and to listen when I felt overwhelmed. But those hopes burst like a bubble, leaving me questioning whether to continue or bail out. Like the melodramatic protagonists, I made the tough choice to push forward, falling once but standing taller three times over. Despite not having my co-interns by my side, I knew they were there in spirit, ready to lend an ear and offer support, which my supervisor made me feel.

Pressure. Writing isn’t as simple as scarfing down scalding rice and then spitting it out once our tongues are singed. Every word in a news story article must be factual and backed by concrete evidence. Once it’s out there and read by hordes of readers, there’s no turning back the clock to erase what’s been consumed. During my internship at GoodNewsPilipinas.com, I discovered that crafting an article is akin to detective work—information isn’t sourced from just one place, but meticulously confirmed from multiple outlets. My communication, writing, and research skills skyrocketed during this time. From conducting interviews to adopting the GoodNewsPilipinas.com writing style and delving deep into research, I found myself swimming in a sea of information, sourced from diverse perspectives. Now, while this may sound like a breeze, trust me, the pressure was on. It wasn’t just about churning out news stories; it was about making them stand out, sparkle, and shine in a sea of content. Were my articles worth the read? This wasn’t just a school assignment; it was a stepping stone toward my dreams. But hey, the pressure didn’t linger too long because, with the guidance of GoodNewsPilipinas.com, I managed to create articles that made waves. And what really tickled my fancy? They let me use my name on those articles. That’s what I love about this company—they don’t just value the article; they value you as an intern.

Laughter. Oh, the joyous sound that echoed through the halls during my internship days! I found myself chuckling at my own “lutang” moments, those instances where my brain felt as clear as mud. But let me tell you, as much as I enjoyed a good laugh, my supervisor made sure I stayed on track. We’d often huddle together to discuss my progress with article writing, and they’d offer tips to ease the pressure and make things less “sabaw.” These sessions weren’t just formal meetings; they were friendly chats infused with professionalism. And it didn’t stop there—weekends became opportunities for more informal feedback sessions. Now, picture this: every intern had to propose a project before wrapping up their stint, and guess which bright idea of mine got the green light? None other than “Good Laugh.” As the self-appointed star of my own comedic show, I pitched the idea of injecting some humor into GoodNewsPilipinas.com. After all, laughter is also good news, right? I penned a couple of hilarious stories and suggested more for future interns. And get this—I even tried my hand at editing videos, something I never thought I’d tackle due to my lack of skills. But with the guidance and trust of GoodNewsPilipinas.com, I pulled it off! Beyond the laughter, what truly made my internship special was the sense of belonging and the bonds forged with my colleagues.

Amused. As my internship days drew to a close, I found myself thoroughly entertained by the whole experience, much like riding a rollercoaster. What struck me most was the sheer professionalism of the team behind GoodNewsPilipinas.com. And oh, the growth I witnessed in my own writing and communication skills! Thanks to the guidance and support of GoodNewsPilipinas.com, I achieved things I never thought possible. Who would’ve guessed I’d write an article that went viral or edit videos that reached a wide audience? It was a delightful surprise! What’s more, despite being “just” an intern, I was given the chance to showcase my skills as a writer, and that trust meant the world to me.

Like a rollercoaster ride, you either come out feeling queasy and unchanged, or you scream with delight, cherishing every twist and turn along the way. My internship was definitely the latter, and I’ll treasure every “wasiwas” (swoosh) moment I experienced. Finding myself standing at the exit of this rollercoaster ride of emotions, a little dizzy, a lot wiser, and with a newfound appreciation for the safety harness of friendship that kept me strapped in through every loop-de-loop of uncertainty, I step off the ride. Feeling both exhilarated and relieved, I know that although the journey may have been a wild one, I’ve come out on the other side with memories to cherish, skills to boast, and a stomach strong enough to handle even the most nauseating of corporate twists. So, with a mix of pride and relief, I wave goodbye to the internship rollercoaster, promising myself that next time, I’ll remember to pack some metaphorical motion sickness tablets.
