Blackbird, located at The Nielson Tower along Makati Avenue, has been chosen one of Monocle’s 50 favorite restaurants in the world for 2019.

The Monocle Restaurant Awards published by the British magazine Monocle is one of the most sought after awards by food establishments around the globe as it is given by editors of the magazine as they travel on assignments in different parts of the world. For this year’s awards, the theme was to celebrate great drinking and dining without the foam, fuss and trickery.

Blackbird is proudly the only one on the list from the Philippines and one of only seven in Asia. The award brings Blackbird into the elite list of Filipino restaurants recognized in worldwide awards such as Toyo Eatery and Bad Saint.

On social media, Chef Kerwin Go thanked Monocle for the recognition and thanking everyone that has been part of this award. “I would like to thank every single chef, waiter, runner, bartender and manager who make it happen every single day. Congratulations to us.”

Blackbird is in Monocle’s Drinking & Dining Directory Spring/Summer 2019 edition as number 49 in its 2019 Restaurant Awards. “The menu is a celebration of travel,” the short review reads.

Blackbird offers its guests different sets of menus for daytime, nighttime, afternoon tea, and brunch — from dishes like dry rubbed Wagyu hanger steak to the Blackbird fish pie comprised of salmon, smoked trout, sweet shrimps, creamy leeks, and potato crust. The restaurant also has a wide range of drink and dessert options, such as the pineapple, mint, yoghurt and honey lass; the strawberry, banana and chia seed smoothie; and the green tea and vanilla ice cream milkshake, among many others.

The other regional dining places on the list include — Cignale Enoteca (No. 6) and Fujimaru in Tokyo (48); Francis in Hong Kong (39); Monk in Kyoto (33); Appia (5) and The Never Ending Summer in Bangkok (28).

This year’s Monocle Restaurant Awards list is topped by Italian bed and breakfast 1477 Reichhalter in Lana, Italy.

The Nielson Tower in Ayala Triangle where Blackbird is located used to be the country’s first commercial airport built by a British man who moved to Manila in the 1930s. However, it was turned into an American military airfield during the outbreak of World War II. After the war, it was refurbished by Philippine Airlines but was also abandoned in 1946 when PAL transferred to Pasay City.
