Filipino champion boxer Eumir Marcial delivered a spectacular 3rd round stop in Jordan and earned the 3rd spot in the Philippine team going to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Eumir Marcial joins fellow 30th Southeast Asian Games gold medalists pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena (1st qualifier) and gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo (2nd qualifier) in Team Philippines at the world quadrennial games after winning his middleweight bout at the Asia Oceania Olympic Qualifiers in Amman, Jordan early Monday morning, March 9, 2020 (Philippine Time).

The AIBA Men’s World Boxing Championships silver medalist won his ticket to Tokyo during his quarterfinals bout against Byamba-Erdene Otgonbaatar of Mongolia. Marcial had been leading the scores in the first and second rounds with two standing 8 counts on the Mongolian before the referee stopped the fight on the 3rd round with some 45 seconds left.

“Apat na taon kong hinintay ito matapos na hindi ako naka qualify nung 2016 dahil sa injury. Kaya napakatamis nito. Lalo ko pang dodoblehin ang training ko para makuha ko ang talagang target namin ng Papa ko- ang ginto sa Olympics (I waited for this for four years after I failed to qualify in 2016 due to an injury. This is very sweet. I will fully train to get my and my father’s target — the Olympic gold),” Marcial said in a Philippine News Agency report. Marcial’s father, Eulalio, was his first trainer and continues to train young boxers in their hometown of Zamboanga City.

The 24-year-old Marcial is now in the semifinals as he waits to face the winner of the Michael Roberrd Muskita-Ashish Kumar match.

Other Filipino boxers on their way to include an Olympic spot include Nesthy Petecio, Riza Pasuit, and Irish Magno.
