The University of the Philippines (UP) has been shortlisted for the Times Higher Education (THE) Asian Awards 2020.

After its excellent showing in THE University Rankings 2020 which recorded the U.P. with a 30-point jump to 65th rank among the Top Asian Universities, the state university scored a place in the Top 8 Asian Universities vying for the “Oscars of higher education’s” 10 major awards.

The University of the Philippines was announced on June 3, 2020, to be shortlisted for the Times Higher Education DataPoints Merit Award that looks “at Asian universities that could be considered to be ‘unsung heroes’—those whose research excellence outpaces the recognition of their strength among the 10,000+ academics polled across the globe in our annual Reputation Survey.”

The Philippines’ leading university which celebrated its 112th Founding Anniversary on June 18, 2020, competes in one of the 5 new award categories launched this year. U.P. joins more than 60 universities that have made the shortlist for 10 awards.

U.P. was selected among the top 8 after an evaluation of the performance of 489 universities. The state university competes for the award against the American University of Beirut, Lebanon; King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia; Nankai University, China; Hunan University, China; Soochow University, China; Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), China; and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), China.

The Times Higher Education virtual awards ceremony is scheduled for November.

U.P. entered THE Top 100 Asian Universities list in 2019, ranking in 95th spot.
