A Dugong and hundreds of dolphins were spotted by a team of conservationists during its monthly visit to the protected seas of Sarangani Bay in Mindanao.

Marine conservation teams from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 12 (DENR 12) together with the Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS), Sarangani Environmental Conservation and Protection Center (ECPC), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources XII and General Santos City Environment and Natural Resources Office, reported in early September the sighting of the marine mammals during their monthly monitoring visit held on August 25-28, 2020.

The group reported spotting 150-200 Spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) near the coast of Malapatan.

They also sighted 18 Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus) close to the shores of Brgy. Bula in Gensan and Alabel town.

A Dugong (Dugong dugon) was also sighted by the group in Barangay Cablalan, Glan town during their monitoring visit.
