Iloilo student Edgian James Florida is expressing his love for nature and fashion through his ‘green artwork’ which incorporates leaves, petals, and other natural materials found in the Philippines.

Florida says he hopes to boost love for the environment through his art’s resourceful use of natural materials.

The 18-year-old has been making fashion art since he was in Grade 10. He is now an incoming Grade 12 student in Janiuay National Comprehensive High School in Badiangan, Iloilo.

The aspiring fashion designer says he wants to inspire others to see the beauty of nature through an eco-conscious lens with his artwork which commonly features plants and other materials he finds in his backyard.

Florida also leveraged his art to earn funds for his family in the midst of the nationwide quarantine to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

“Growing up from poverty and living in an ordinary and simple life in a barrio molded me as young inspirational artist…I’m very thankful to God for giving me this beautiful talent, taking care of myself and opening a lot of opportunities this quarantine season,” he wrote in a social media post on August 12, 2020.

Filipino artists who champion local material include Palawan-based company AraPilak also makes clever use of readily available resources with a clothing line made from flour sack fabric or ‘katsa’ to promote environmental sustainability amid the pandemic.

Filipino artists Pedro Angco Jr. and Rowel Naanep are meanwhile advocating for the environment with their artwork made from collected plastic litter and debris in a bid to reduce waste.
