The photo of local kids at a Dumaguete beach shot by Hersley-Ven Casero has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2021 Sony World Photography Awards organized by the World Photography Organisation.

Casero’s photo of people leaping into the ocean at Bantayan Beach in Dumaguete City was among the 10 shortlisted images in the Open Competition Motion Category of the annual awards that recognized the best photographs from the past year by the “most talented, dedicated, and creative photographers”.

The Dumaguete-based artist was among the top 150 entries selected from over 330,000 submissions from across 220 countries and territories.

“Free Falling” is captioned by the visual artist as “A group of friends cool off by leaping from the seawall into the ocean at Bantayan Beach, Dumaguete City, Philippines.”

“I regularly pass by this spot on the lookout for a good shot, as it’s a popular hangout for these active and fearless local kids,” Casero adds.

The Philippines’ beach photo was among the Top 30 photos presented by The Atlantic on April 21.

Casero and Mary Nholeen Maypa’s works, also in the shortlist of the same category, were the only two photos from the Philippines that made it to the top entries.

The Sony World Photography Awards announced the winners of 10 categories and over 100 shortlisted entries in the Professional, Open, Student, and Youth competitions on April 15.

The winners and shortlisted photographers are presented a virtual exhibition available to view via the World Photography Organisation website here:

Ocean protection campaigner Danny Ocampo’s underwater photograph titled “Fish Tornado” was in the Top 50 commended works at the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards.
