The 2025 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (#VCFilmFest) launched AAPI Heritage Month with the emotional screening of Third Act, directed by Tadashi Nakamura, at 6 PM in the historic Aratani Theater in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles.
The documentary tells a deeply personal story. Its logline says it all:
“Generations of artists call Robert A. Nakamura ‘the godfather of Asian American Media,’ but filmmaker Tadashi Nakamura calls him Dad. Robert’s diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease leads to an exploration of art, activism, grief, and fatherhood.”
Third Act was also an official selection of the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, adding to the excitement of its West Coast screening.
Before the screening, I witnessed inspiring opening remarks from Francis Cullado, Executive Director of the festival, and Tadashi Nakamura himself. Their words captured the heart of Asian American storytelling and the power of film to preserve both culture and family legacy.
As a Filipino-American media personality, I felt proud and emotional seeing this celebration of identity, creativity, and generational love unfold during AAPI Heritage Month.
