Filipino-American artist Fred DeAsis is bringing Filipino heritage to the spotlight at the Skokie Festival of Cultures on May 17 and 18, 2025, at Oakton Park in Illinois.
DeAsis, a leading voice in the growing Kutbayin art movement, will give lectures and live art demonstrations showcasing “Kutkut”—a nearly forgotten pre-colonial Filipino art technique. Kutkut combines sgraffito, encaustic, and layered painting to form textured, three-dimensional works. It often features Baybayin, the Philippines’ ancient script, linking the art to national identity and cultural roots.
Attendees will witness firsthand how DeAsis brings ancestral methods to life. His work has helped revive and promote these traditional techniques.
The Skokie Parade of Culture runs from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM on both days at Oakton Park (4701 Oakton Street, Skokie, IL). It will feature over 50 performances, vendors, interactive booths, food, and family-friendly activities representing 28 cultures. The opening ceremony is on Saturday at 1:00 PM, and the closing program happens on Sunday at 5:45 PM.
