GoodNewsPilipinas.com Managing Editor Angie Quadra Balibay recently engaged communication students and senior high school learners of Philippine Christian University (PCU) Dasmariñas in a thought-provoking World Press Freedom session on digital storytelling, AI tools, and the mission of telling stories that make Filipinos proud.
Held on May 14, 2025, the talk is organized by the Arts and Sciences Society in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences, led by Professor Amor Jude Thadeus Soriano, Program Head of Mass Communication, who welcomed participants to the forum. Faculty member Rianne Abiador moderated the open forum and served as co-adviser of the organizing student society.
Balibay shared her professional journey from broadcast media to digital content, highlighting the value of adaptability and purpose. “Last year marked my 10 years of shaping stories that make Filipinos proud,” she said, referencing her work at Good News Pilipinas, which recently earned a Gold Anvil Award for Best Publication and ranked #13 globally among good news websites.
Here are some event highlight snaps:
Both college and senior high school students actively participated in the Q&A, with questions ranging from AI use in writing to the role of news branding.
Asked how integrity is maintained in news writing despite the use of AI, Balibay emphasized that “We think of AI as tools we need to use, tame, and lead as humans with judgment and heart.” She explained:
“When a writer submits content aided by AI-assisted research, with grammar checked and even styled by AI—that’s just part of the writer conducting self-editing, which is what we want all writers to DO—be your own self-editor. So when your work gets to the actual editor then we can already elevate our discussion beyond proofreading to the substance of the article, the proper sourcing, correct interpretation of the facts, and the newsworthiness of the topic for Good News Pilipinas.”
Another student asked why the platform brands itself with the term “good news.” In response, Balibay clarified:
“At Good News Pilipinas we aim to balance the consumption of stories about the Philippines and Filipinos around the world. The reality is the majority of news, because of its nature, are mostly about aberrations in society. And this is needed, because people need to know what isn’t working well in society so the authorities and the public can move together to resolve the problems.
Where does Good News Pilipinas come in? We supply the other face of the reality—and the reality is what is happening in the country and to Filipinos are not all bad. There are good stories that need to be told… to inspire people and tell the world of our achievements and our inspiring stories as a nation, to make all Filipinos wherever they may be, proud of being Filipino—this is our mandate.”
Balibay also showcased the AI-driven storytelling tools used at GoodNewsPilipinas.com, offering students a glimpse into the real-world newsroom applications of technology in responsible journalism.
