Cagayan de Oro’s Corpus Christi School (CCS) Children’s Choir won the silver medal at the 2nd Harbin International Children’s Choir Festival in China.

The CCS Children’s Choir, also known as The Falsettos, placed in the Top 3 choirs in the competition, following Russia’s Gold and besting South Korea which settled for Bronze.

The Philippine school choir competed among 20 children’s choral groups from around the world who joined the Harbin contest held from July 15-19, 2019.

The CCS children’s choir is composed of grade school pupils and high school students from the school’s Pueblo campus in Cagayan de Oro City.

The award-winning choir is conducted by music teacher Paul Tiburtius F. Salipong, with Ma. Theresa L. Pakino as the choir’s choreographer and drillmaster.

The choir participated in the China competition led by CCS Assistant Principal Ofelia L. Dulay, with the support of the Sister Cities Program of the city government of Cagayan de Oro City. The city government report about the school’s win notes that Harbin City, from the province of Heilongjiang in the northernmost part of China, is a sister city of Cagayan de Oro. The CCS Choir was chosen to represent Cagayan de Oro City in the Harbin City international choral competition.

The choir sang the well-loved Filipino folk songs “Paruparong Bukid” and “Pinpin de Sarapin” as their competition pieces.

The choir also performed in related events at the festival, singing the Filipino folk song “Osoy Osoy”, the “Circle of Life” from the popular Disney movie The Lion King, and a Mandarin folk song, “Ai Hai Yo”.

The Corpus Christi School Children’s Choir was organized in 2014. In December 2014 it placed 2nd during the annual Bangga sa Daygon of the city government of Cagayan de Oro. The choir became a 3-peat winner of the Christmas caroling contest for elementary school chorales held In 2015, 2016 and 2017. It was also a finalist in the Manila Broadcasting Company’s choir competition and the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA).

The CCS Children’s choir’s medal finish follows the country’s provincial schools’ big wins in choral competitions such as the Albay High School Choir’s championship titles in Spain, and the Cordillera High School Glee Club’s gold medals in Indonesia.
