Fil-Ams Olivia Rodrigo, Saweetie bag top honors in Billboard’s Women in Music Awards

Filipino-American singers Olivia Rodrigo and Saweetie have bagged top honors in Billboard’s annual Women in Music awards in the United States.

The Billboard Charts-topping Olivia Rodrigo received the magazine’s highest honor as Woman of the Year for her record-breaking single “Drivers License” and her debut album “Sour”.

Grammy-nominated rapper Saweetie, who made headlines as she honored her Filipino roots at her Met Gala debut, was named this year’s winner of the Game Changer Award.

Saweetie, whose real name is Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, publicly embraced her Black and Filipino roots by donning a gown inspired by her mixed heritage at the Met Gala in New York.

Olivia Rodrigo, who was also named Time Magazine’s Entertainer of the Year, had earlier told Disney that she and the rest of her family have grown up following Filipino traditions and eating Filipino food.

Rodrigo and Saweetie will both take the stage to receive their awards and perform at the annual music event which will take place at the YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California on March 2, 2022.

Hosted by American singer-songwriter Ciara this year, the annual Women in Music Billboard Awards will recognize music’s top female artists, producers, and executives for their contributions to the music industry and their communities.

Other honorees this year include women trailblazers in music such as Gabby Barrett, Phoebe Bridgers, Doja Cat, Golnar Khosrowshahi, Karol G, Bonnie Raitt, and Summer Walker.

Both Olivia Rodrigo and Saweetie have bagged nominations in this year’s 64th Grammy Awards, along with fellow Fil-Am artists like H.E.R. and Bruno Mars, among others.
