Filipina student Pierre Beatrix Madlangbayan won first place at the English-Speaking Union (ESU) Kansas City Branch Shakespeare Competition, earning the right to advance to the national competition to be held in New York City.

The Garden City High School student impressed the contest judges and bested 11 competitors with her performance of a monologue of the character Mark Antony from the play Julius Caesar and reciting a Shakespeare sonnet.

As the winner of the community Branch Competition held at the Kansas City Public Library’s Truman Auditorium on February 19, 2023, Madlangbayan will receive an all-expenses paid trip to New York City to compete in the ESU National Competition to be held on April 24, 2023.

The Filipino junior pupil also received a First-Place prize package from the ESU Kansas City Branch, which includes a check for $150, a full scholarship to the Shakespeare Exploration Camp offered by the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, a Certificate of Appreciation, and an engraved First Place Medallion.

Madlangbayan will join over 50 contestants from around the United States in the ESU National Shakespeare Competition to perform monologues and sonnets before a distinguished panel of judges.

Seven to ten students with the best performances will advance to the final round and compete for cash prizes and the opportunity to attend a summer drama program.

The ESU National Shakespeare Competition is a performance-based educational program that has been recognized by the Globe Center (USA), the Children’s Theatre Foundation of America, and the American Academy of Achievement.

CHECK OUT young Filipino achievers like the Far Eastern University (FEU) students behind short films that recently received honors at international film festivals and Philippine Science High School-Main Campus (PSHS) student Gwen Lianna Valimento who won honors in the Clean Tech Competition of New York City.
