Filipino Filmmaker Erik Matti to direct an HBO originals episode

Erik Matti is picked by Food Lore’s Eric Khoo to direct HBO episode

Award-winning writer and director Erik Matti, known for the groundbreaking films BuyBust (2018), Honor Thy Father (2015), and On the Job (2013) will direct an episode of “Food Lore,” an original production of HBO Asia.

The show is an eight-part anthology series focused on Asian cuisine, created by Singaporean filmmaker Eric Khoo, the showrunner of last year’s HBO Asia original series “Folklore.”

The food-themed series is a collaboration among leading Asian filmmakers from Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Matti is directing the episode about Filipino food.

“I’ve always wanted a director from the Philippines. Actually, even for ‘Folklore.’ But because of commitments, it was a little difficult. But I’m so happy I have a Filipino now for ‘Food Lore,’” Khoo said in an interview with Inquirer writing editor Oliver Pulumbarit.

He added that Matti will be directing “a very emotional episode.”

HBO Asia disclosed at the Hong Kong FILMART their line-up of original Asian productions for 2019. “Food Lore” is set to be released on November.
