Filipino netizens’ tweets and other social media posts express thanks to health workers and scientists in the frontline of the fight against COVID-19

As escalating cases of COVID-19 in Manila have placed health workers and scientists in the frontline of the fight to control the coronavirus disease, netizens went on Twitter and Facebook to express gratitude for their public service and sent hashtags #SalamatUP and the topic of “thank yous” to trending.

Netizens showed their support to health workers and scientists who have been working nonstop in response to the Code Red Alert in the health sector since the state of public health emergency was publicly declared by the Philippine Government on March 9, 2020.

Netizens took to Twitter on March 12 to thank the University of the Philippines National Institutes of Health (UP NIH) scientists after it presented a new and cheaper rapid test kit for COVID-19.

@_mherls tweeted “I salute UP researchers as well as the scientists for making it possible. #SalamatUP”

Another twitter user @frnchllysnyl tweeted “I want to take a minute to thank the UP community for the endless love and care for our country. From extending a helping hand to the marginalized, to being the voice of the voiceless and now for developing a Corona Virus test kit which are highly needed right now #SalamatUP”

Netizens also showed their appreciation to all front line healthcare workers who are battling the disease.

Facebook user Alexia Buenconsejo commented, “Big Salute to those people”.

Netizens Miko Cruz and Peejay Coronel Reyes also reminded everyone “not to forget to thank the admins staff for making sure every nook and cranny of public places well-sanitized” and to “Please include the cleaning attendants of the ER, ICU, isolation rooms, COVID-19 screening tents”.

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday announced the issuance of a Certificate of Exemption for the SARS CoV-2 PCR Detection Kit also known as Manila Health Tek’s GenAmplify developed by the team of Dr. Raul Destura from the UP NIH in January. It is less expensive than available test kits from other countries, will take less time to perform the test, and is ready for field testing coupled with gene sequencing at the Philippine Genome Center.
