Philippine-born Wesley So met expectations of his Rapid Chess skills and is now in a 4-way co-leadership of the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour.

The Cavite native who started his career in the Philippines before moving to the United States now shares the lead with world number 1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway, fellow United States player Hikaru Nakamura, and Russian Sergey Karjakin after the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge opening day games on Wednesday, May 20, 2020 (May 19 U.S. Time).

Wesley So won twice in a row against Chinese players Yu Yangyi and Wei Yi after going into the Lindores Abbey leg of the chess tour in 9th spot sandwiched between the star players of China.

The Fil-Am Grandmaster then split points in his next games against Jan-Krzysztof Duda of Poland and Alexander Grischuk of Russia.

Wesley So shares the same 4 1/2 points standing with Magnus Carlsen.

Wesley So previously dealt Magnus Carlsen a resounding beating to claim the World Fischer Random Chess Championship title in 2019.

The Cavite province pride is among the 12 Super Grandmasters playing in the 2nd leg of the 5-series chess tourney in the format considered one of So’s strengths after he rose to World #2 in the 2018 Rapid Chess Rankings.

The Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge of the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour is being held online from May 19-June 3 (May 20- June 4 Philippine Time) presented live on Chess24.com.

Wesley So is vying for the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge’s USD150,000 prize pot, part of the USD1 million total prize money in the 5-leg series that started with the Magnus Carlsen Invitational held from April 18 to May 3 which Carlsen won. The winner of each tourney will be vying for the Tour Final title to be held August 9 – August 20.
