UST Singers’ Mark Agpasa judged Composition Winner of 2019 Busan Choral Festival & Competition

Filipino composer Mark Agpasa’s work was adjudged the best among “artistically higher quality songs with contemplative qualities.” Credits to UST Singers.

University of Santo Tomas (UST) Singers’ assistant musical director, Mark Raeniel Agpasa, was declared Composition Winner of the 2019 Busan Choral Festival & Competition.

Mark Agpasa, a University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music graduate, was announced as the Gold Prize winner of the Composition Competition that judged 56 applicants from 29 countries.

The assistant musical director of the internationally-awarded UST Singers won 1st Place for his “Jubilate Deo” which vied among 60 choral pieces submitted to the annual Busan, South Korea event.

Agpasa emerged as the winner from among 8 finalists judged by a 5-man international jury.

“Ultimately, the composers’ creations were well appreciated for their contemplative qualities,” said Jury president Young-Jo Lee of South Korea.

“The Busan Composition Competition much prefers artistically higher quality songs, so the judgment focused on it,” added the competition organizers in the announcement released on July 18.

The 2019 Composition Competition Winners:

1st Place: Mark Raeniel Agpasa (Philippines) “Jubilate Deo”
2nd Place: Carlos Cordero (Venezuela ) “Tota Pulchra es, Maria”
3rd Place: Guilherme Hollanda-Azevedo (Brazil) “Ocean of Illusions”

Mark Agpasa and the other placers will be awarded their Diplomas during the 2019 Busan Choral Festival & Competition Award Ceremony on October 19, 2019.

Mark Agpasa’s work, as the first prize winner, will be performed on the same date at the 2019 Busan Choral Festival & Competition. The Filipino composer’s Gold win comes with a $1,000 cash prize.
